Several studies have linked Actos to heart failure and bladder cancer. In a 2007 study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) found that “serious heart failure is caused by pioglitazone.” Another study published in JAMA found that Actos significantly increases the risk of heart failure compared to other diabetes medications.
In a three-year study conducted by the French Medicines Agency, researchers found that patients taking pioglitazone, the active ingredient in Actos, significantly put patients at a greater risk of developing bladder cancer. Over 1.5 million patients were examined making it the largest Actos study.
In another study published in May 2012, British researchers studied 115,727 patients and discovered that Actos increased the risk of bladder cancer by 83%. Researchers also found the risk increases further with the long-term use of Actos.
In June 2011, the FDA released a safety warning to consumers after a link between Actos and bladder cancer was found. The FDA warning was prompted after a five-year analysis of Actos found that patients with the longest exposure had a significantly greater chance of developing bladder cancer. Patients who took Actos for over a year had a 40% increased risk for developing bladder cancer.
The FDA advised that doctors not prescribe Actos to patients with a history of bladder cancer. In addition, the FDA also warned consumers to be on alert for potential signs of bladder cancer while taking Actos, which include:
After the link between Actos and bladder cancer was found, the agency required the risk to be added to the Actos label and on patient medication guides.
