What is Xarelto?

Xarelto is an anticoagulant – commonly referred to as a blood thinner. Blood thinners prevent dangerous blood clots that damage vital organs in the body. Xarelto is approved for several uses, including patients who have had knee or hip replacement surgery. It is marketed as requiring less monitoring and being more convenient than previous generations of blood thinners.

Xarelto Side Effects

Xarelto has several known minor side effects, but the most serious side effect is internal bleeding. According to reports, Xarelto is incredibly effective as a blood thinner, but it also can increase the risk for internal bleeding. What’s worse, is there is no known antidote to reverse the effects of Xarelto once hemorrhaging begins.

Xarelto is marketed as a safe alternative to Warfarin (coumadin), another blood thinner. However, unlike Warfarin, there is no reversal agent that can stop internal bleeding; therefore, doctors or emergency personnel often have problems trying to control bleeding after a traumatic accident or when cerebral hemorrhaging occurs in a patient taking Xarelto.

Media Reports Link Xarelto to Hundreds of Serious Injuries

A company called Adverse Events, Inc. analyzes the side effects experienced by drug patients in the United States. According to the company’s report, there have been over 1,800 total reports involving Xarelto side effects. Of the 1,800 reports, hospitalization was reported in 891 cases. Nearly 10% of those patients died.

In Germany, similar reports have surfaced. German media reported that 968 adverse effects were reported to German health officials in an 8 month span in 2013. 72 patients lost their lives.

However, despite the growing amount of information about the dangerous nature of Xarelto, Bayer and Janssen still market Xarelto as a safe, effective blood thinner that does not require extensive monitoring.
