Propecia has been linked to over a dozen serious side effects, which has prompted hundreds of lawsuits against the company’s manufacturer, Merck. While many people know about the physical side effects of Propecia, few people realize that these physical side effects can lead to permanent emotional trauma.
Propecia has been linked to several emotional and psychological issues because of the many permanent sexual and physical side effects that male users are exposed to from this drug. Emotional trauma can cause permanent changes to the brain and can alter brain chemistry, leading to long-term issues.
In men who suffered from persistent sexual dysfunction after using Propecia, emotional trauma has lasted months or sometimes even years. This trauma can overwhelm a person’s ability to function normally and even lead to severe permanent issues like post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
If the trauma is not treated or is persistent, emotional exhaustion may set in making a person become distant or cold. Severe emotional trauma often leads to loss of self-esteem, pain attacks, anxiety, despair, and a person will often see emotionally unavailable. These emotional issues are often made worse or triggered by well-known sexual side effects from Propecia usage.
Some men who have suffered from Propecia sexual side effects have reported feeling very depressed and were clinically diagnosed with severe depression. This forces men to take anti-depressants and seek psychiatric help, although sometimes even these treatment methods do not work.
In a recent Propecia lawsuit, the parents of a former Propecia user claim that their son committed suicide after suffering from persistent sexual side effects due to Propecia use. Twenty-two year old Randy Santmann ended his own life in 2008 just a week after being released from a psychiatric facility and just six months after discontinuing Propecia treatment.
John Santmann, father of Randy Santmann protested outside Merck’s headquarters and told others, “Don’t take this drug. It’s just like playing Russian roulette. It’s not worth it.”
While any side effect of Propecia can cause emotional trauma, the sexual side effects seem to be the main trigger for emotional trauma. Propecia’s label does now warn that these sexual side effects can develop during Propecia usage; but the labeling warning also says the side effects should go away after discontinuing use. However, this is not always the case and more men are reporting persistent side effects.
Some of the most common physical side effects that cause emotional issues include:
Erectile Dysfunction – Erectile dysfunction occurs when a man is unable to obtain or maintain an erection. This can be very embarrassing to a man and can hurt his self-image and kill his sexual desire.
Genital shrinkage – In some men, the testicles or penis shrank in size. Men are very self-conscience about the size of their genitals, so a decrease in size has serious negative effects on a man’s self image.
Gynecomastia – Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue. Men who develop enlarged breasts often feel feminine and lost their sense of “manhood.” Although gynecomastia generally regresses, the damage can already be done.
There are several other side effects that obviously can affect a man’s self image. There are plenty of other sexual, body disfigurement, and even cancerous side effects to taking Propecia. All of the side effects affect a man’s self image and mental health, and can lead to serious emotional trauma.
